Alhambra, California –

Ben Yin-Pan Kwok (BYK) aka BioWorkZ is a traditionally trained illustrator with a BFA Degree in Illustration from California State University Long Beach. Ben was born in Taipei Taiwan and moved to California at the age of 4 and has lived in Los Angeles ever since. Working as a graphic artist in the fashion industry for several years has allowed Ben to develop his comfort with vector programs. His work is a fusion of Art Nouveau, graphic design, fashion, graffiti, and personal touches. We were captivated with Ben’s portrait style. They are contemporary with kind of a classical illustration feel.

We were especially impressed with the contouring technique that he uses. It reminded us all of typographical illustrations. Very unique and precise with a sense of humanity. Here are a few of our favourites along with some descriptions from the man himself:

Introspection: Is about knowing oneself. It’s easy think that you know yourself, but do you really? When it comes down to it, do you know exactly what you’re really capable of? To me, this piece is about reflecting, to search your soul in your journey through life. You never know what you’re going to find.

Ponder: This was one of my earlier pieces in using vector as an artistic medium. I was definitely experimenting with different concepts, color scheme the line work within the face. People either hate or love that, but to me, it’s fresh and different. I’m still experimenting, trying to find my voice in a sea of beautiful vector art. This piece is about wondering, about thinking, trying to make sense of everything.

To Dream: This piece is a bit more magical in the sense that you can escape into your own imagination and anything can happen. It’s a happy place to be and no matter what happens in your life, you can always dream.

Forgotten: Is an emotional piece for me. It was during a time when I broke up with my girlfriend and felt that I didn’t mean much to her. I didn’t matter to her, as if I have been forgotten already. The feeling of emptiness, loneliness and sadness is what I’m trying to portray in this piece. She looks away because it’s hard to deal with the situation. •
